The DTC Rotary Club was involved in the following projects during 2006 to 2007 that are literacy related:
- Molly Weber reads to a Big Brother and Big Sister kids every week.
- Sandy Long and his wife, Ros, mentor a third grader at East Elementary in Littleton, CO.
- We continue to pay the salaries of the instructors at the Vocational School for the Deaf in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. (Centro de Vocation Escuela Sordos) We helped to found this school 3 years ago, and it graduated its first class last summer. The students have learned sewing, woodworking, computer and beautician services skills.
- Along with 4 other Rotary Clubs from Michigan and Canada, we provide food for 120 children every day at a school for undocumented children in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic (Una Luz en El Camino). In the D.R., many poor children are born at home and without birth certificates. These children are considered to be undocumented and not allowed to attend public school. When some other Rotarians and I were in the D.R. in February 2006, we met a young woman, Sandra Tineo, who started a school for these children in the poorest slum in Puerto Plata. When asked what she needed, she immediately said food. She explained that the children were malnourished and hungry, which made it hard for them to learn. We immediately agreed to buy the food. Adults and Rotarians from the community cook the food, and the children get one good meal per day.
- We donate $2,000 to Colorado Youth at Risk which pays for a 5 day residential Launch Course along with monthly workshops and one on one mentoring during the school year for a high school student who is identified as being at risk for dropping out of school.
- We provide a $2,000 scholarship to a member of the Thomas Jefferson High School Interact Club who has shown an exceptional history of living the Rotary motto of Service above Self. The scholarship goes to help the recipient pay college or vocational school expenses.
- We sponsor the Thomas Jefferson High School Interact Club, and 2 of our members attend the weekly meetings. We also help them raise money for their projects and match money they raise.
- We also donated a large number of books to the District book drive a couple of weeks ago.
- We give student of the month awards to outstanding students who are also members of the T.J. High School Interact Club. They attend our meetings and speak to us when they are given the award.
